Physics & Astronomy Colloquium – Spring 2023 – Jamileh Beik Mohammadi

February 23, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Speaker: Jamileh Beik Mohammadi (Loyola University)

Title: Spintronics: Research and Education

Abstract: From a small electric motor or a cellphone in a village in Alabama to Voyager, space stations, and Mars rovers, magnetic devices are vital to many applications. Spintronics offers promising solutions for magnetic devices such as memories and sensors. The technological significance of these devices’ fuels both fundamental and applied spintronics research. Magnetic properties of materials stem from interactions such as magnetic anisotropy and exchange. I study such interactions in spintronics systems via dynamic and quasi-static analysis methods. In this talk, I will present my team’s latest results focusing on 1) investigating perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnetic/non-ferromagnetic multilayer thin films and 2) understanding the switching mechanisms of perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions. In addition, I will discuss our recent progress in successful implementation of Virtual Reality (VR) technology in (solid-state) physics that aims to promote physics and magnetism education and research.
