The mission of the Department of Physics and Astronomy is multifold. Through our undergraduate programs, we prepare students for graduate work in physics or astronomy, or for immediate employment in physics-related jobs. We play a vital role in the education of other science and engineering students and promote the understanding of science through our general studies courses.
Our graduate programs prepare students for teaching and research positions in colleges and universities, and for research positions in government and industrial laboratories. Our research contributes new knowledge in the fields of physics and astronomy.
Through public outreach and involvement within our professions, we work to improve public understanding and promote the advancement of science.
