Physics & Astronomy Colloquium – Spring 2019 – Henderson/Rumerio

January 30, 2019 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Speaker 1: Conor Henderson (University of Alabama)

Title 1: Searches for Extra Dimensions with the CMS Detector at the Large
Hadron Collider

Abstract 1: Discovery of extra dimensions of space would revolutionize our view of
the universe. They may also provide a solution to the hierarchy
problem of the Standard Model, through modifications of the strength
of the gravitational force. This talk will explore the theoretical
motivations to search for evidence of extra dimensions in protonproton
collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, and will present
recent results of such searches by the CMS experiment.

and

Speaker 2: Paolo Rumerio (University of Alabama)

Title 2: High-Luminosity Upgrade of the CMS Detector at the Large Hadron
Collider

Abstract 2: To increase the potential for new discoveries, the Large Hadron
Collider will enter a “High-Luminosity” (HL-LHC) phase of operations
after 2025, with a goal of increasing the data-taking rate by a factor
of five. These operating conditions will require upgrades to the LHC
detectors. This talk will present the motivation and plans for the
upgrade of the CMS detector for HL-LHC operation.
