Observing 2019 Transit of Mercury Across the Sun

November 11, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Astronomy group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy will host a daylight public observing session for the 2019 transit of Mercury across the Sun.  The last transit occurred on May 9, 2016.

Observing will be Led by Dr. Keel with others on hand to help.  Although the transit will begin at approximately 6:30am (near sunrise), we will not begin observing until 9am.

A transit of Mercury across the Sun occurs when Mercury passes directly between the Sun and the Earth, such that the silouette of Mercury can be seen on the face of the Sun.  This is not visible with the unaided eye, since the Sun is too bright, but can be viewed safely with the appropriate equipment.

The event is open to all: young and old, student and non-student, wheel-chair bound or not. In short, it is open to the general public.

Note:
Public observing sessions are conditional on good weather. In case of cloudy or inclement weather, including high winds, public observing will be cancelled. Please check the weather forecast for the day and the Dept. of Physics & Astronomy public observing website before traveling.
