Colloquium – Man Leong Chan – AI in gravitational wave astronomy: successes and challenges

March 19 @ 3:45 pm - 5:00 pm

Speaker: Man Leong (Mervyn) Chan (University of British Columbia)

Title: AI in gravitational wave astronomy: successes and challenges

Abstract:

The LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration has achieved ground-breaking success in detecting over 100 gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences. The observation of GW170817, a binary neutron star merger, has marked the onset of an exciting era of multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. As the sensitivity of current detectors improves, gravitational wave astronomy will face new and interesting challenges before we can fully sense the unseen Universe, including better differentiating between true signals and detector noise. I will provide a brief overview of the accomplishments of the field and the exciting role of AI in the future of this new frontier in astrophysics.
