Colloquium – Jason Terry – Analyzing Planet Forming Environments with Deep Learning

November 30, 2022 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Speaker: Jason Terry (University of Georgia)

Title: Analyzing Planet Forming Environments with Deep Learning

Abstract:

Protoplanetary discs – the birthplaces of planets – offer unique opportunities to advance our theories of planet formation. Observing these rich physical environments reveals mechanisms and conditions that lead to stellar systems, but the overall process is still poorly understood. The recent commissioning of powerful infrared and radio telescopes has provided an explosion of data that makes the gaps in our knowledge even more glaring.
Using simulations of discs under a wide variety of circumstances, deep learning models are created that extract subtle and crucial information about discs. The identification of these interesting features spurs analysis that furthers our understanding of the observations, provides a foundation for theoretical advancement, and possibly finds new planets.
