From Birmingham, Alabama, Josh Jones is researching magnetic and electrical properties of novel materials for use in computer data storage technologies with Dr. Patrick LeClair. Their research group is currently using a custom built noise spectroscopy system, a unique tool useful for measuring the details of magnetic switching in GMR devices, and more recently analyzing the insulator-to-metal phase transition of vanadium dioxide. Josh recently spent six months at Western Digital (Fremont, CA), currently the world’s largest hard drive manufacturer, in their Reader Materials and Process group. Josh designed the code and automated analysis tools for the company’s newly built ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurement tool. His work also focused on improving the performance of the hard drive read head by studying the causes of improved signal-to-noise.
