Public Astronomy Observing and Lecture: Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

February 10, 2017 @ 6:15 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

The Dept. of Physics & Astronomy will be hosting an open house on Friday, February 10th from 6:15p.m. – 9:00p.m.

Graduate student Lucas Johnson will give a public talk on “Eclipses” from 6:15 – 6:45 p.m. in 227 Gallalee Hall.

This will be followed by a public observing session on the roof of Gallalee Hall from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. to view the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse.

Details:
During a penumbral lunar eclipse the Moon will pass into the penumbral shadow of the Earth, a shadow zone where the Sun is only partially blocked by the Earth. This differs from a total lunar eclipse where the Moon passes into the darkest part, or umbral, shadow of the Earth.  The full moon should appear slightly dimmer than usual during the eclipse.

In addition to viewing the eclipsed Moon, other highlights of the night will include the Orion Nebula, one of the nearest stellar nurseries, as well as the Pleiades and Beehive star clusters and several bright visual binary stars.

The event is open to all: young and old, student and non-student, wheel-chair bound or not. In short, it is open to the general public. Although our main telescope, a 16-inch computer-controlled instrument, is not accessible to a wheel-chair-bound visitor, we will have other telescopes on the roof of Gallalee Hall which will be accessible.

Please note, public observing sessions are conditional on good weather. In case of cloudy or inclement weather, including high winds, public observing will be cancelled. Please check the weather forecast for the day and the Dept. of Physics & Astronomy public observing website before traveling.
