Physics & Astronomy Colloquium – Marcos Santander

January 17, 2018 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Speaker: Marcos Santander, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa

Title: News from the gravitational-wave sky

Abstract: The first observation of gravitational waves by LIGO in 2015 followed by the detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of a binary neutron star system in 2017 has opened exciting opportunities for future studies of the cosmos and the laws of physics. This mini-colloquium will present a brief overview of current gravitational-wave detectors, present a highlight of recent discoveries, and describe the multi-messenger studies of gravitational-wave sources (particularly in the gamma-ray band) enabled by these observations.
