Physics & Astronomy Colloquium

September 13, 2017 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Speaker: Venkatesh Veeraraghavan (The University of Alabama)

Title: Recent neutrinoless double beta decay results from EXO-200 experiment

Abstract: An open question within the standard model of particle physics is whether neutrinos are their own antiparticles. Several experiments are engaged in answering this question by conducting a search for neutrinoless double beta decay. I will present the latest results from EXO-200 experiment and an outlook for building on these measurements in the future.

Title: Spintronics as an application of quantum mechanics

Abstract: Quantum mechanical phase is essential in the description of electron spin. In the latest generation of magnetic memory devices, this quantum aspect of spin underlies the writing process of bits that is far more efficient than that used in conventional hard disk drives. In this talk, as an introduction to the field of spintronics, I will explain the mechanism of this magnetic switching induced by the transfer of spin angular momentum.
