Physics & Astronomy Colloquium – Gumbs

April 4, 2018 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Speaker: Godfrey Gumbs, CUNY

Title: Small is different: Electron dynamics at surfaces and nanostructures

Abstract: Femtosecond and subfemtosecond time scales typically rule electron dynamics at metal surfaces. Recent advances in experimental techniques allow the experimental study of such dynamics. In this talk we shall analyze electron dynamics at surfaces and nanostructures with emphasis on screening times, spin-orbit coupling, magnetic and electric field effects as well as mechanical strain on low-dimensional structures such as graphene and silicene. This work has applications in optics, microscopy, nanolithography and catalysis.
