Physics & Astronomy Colloquium – Fall 2019 – Lizzi

October 9, 2019 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Speaker: Fedele Lizzi (Naples University, Italy)

Title: Pointless Physics

Abstract: I will describe the role of points in modern physics, and in particular, in the attempts to build a theory of quantum gravity. Modern theories will require a quantum spacetime, and in it the usual concept of spacetime composed of points, as we have used so far, may lose its meaning. In particular, I will discuss the spectral approach to physics  called noncommutative geometry, and describe a concrete model in quantum field theory in which points loose their meaning.
