Physics & Astronomy Colloquium – Fall 2018 – Johnson

Title: Recycling at UA

Abstract: The presentation will concentrate on UA Recycling’s current program and the focus of diverting items from the local landfill as well as demonstrating a number of benefit, such as: reducing carbon footprint, creating jobs, maintaining jobs, revenue generated, cost savings, extending landfill life expectancy, encourage others to participate, etc. In order to get the full experience of what UA does, a tour of UA Recycling Facility is recommended.

Bio: Tony Johnson has a BBA in management from Henderson State University and a Master’s of Science in Human Resource Management from Troy University. Tony brings 18 years of experience with Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club in five different states managing stores that have annual sales in excess of $100 million dollars. Tony has been with The University of Alabama for 13 years and currently serves as Sr. Executive Director of Logistics and Support Services. He oversees the following departments: Office of Sustainability, Recycling, Central Receiving, Warehouse, Logistical Support, Property and Inventory Management, Surplus Property, Automotive Services, Special Property Management (Liaison to all 47 Greek Houses), and Boone Cabin Property. Annually, UA Recycling demonstrates a revenue and cost savings that exceeds $250,000. In 2017, UA averaged a revenue/cost savings of $205 per ton for each recycling materials diverted from the local landfill.
